Tror det var englænderne der rykkede ind. De tog deres mad. Derfor startede nogen IRA, som kæmpede imod englænderne. Noget i den dur, tror jeg. Søg evt. på Google.

Kan du så fortælle noget om Kampene i Belfast?

The hatred between the Catholics and the Protestants in Northern Ireland comes from the 16th century, where British Protestants emigrated to Northern Ireland. Conflicts between the native Catholics and the British settlers led to two bloody ethnic-religious conflicts between them in 1641–1653 and 1689–1691. The British settlers won the conflicts and they got the control over Northern Ireland. During the next centuries there were many conflicts between the Protestants and the Catholics, and it caused many civil deaths, but it all culminated in 1968 where the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association, which by the way was a Catholic organization, demonstrated because of the Catholics terrible civil rights.

The Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, Terence O’ Neill, promised reforms of Northern Ireland, but many of the Protestants mistrusted NICRA, seeing it as an IRA “Trojan Horse”.
    Violence broke out at several Civil Rights marches when Protestants loyalists attacked civil rights demonstrators with clubs. Almost all the policemen in The Royal Ulster Constabulary were Protestants, and they supported the loyalists and allowed the violence to occur.


Bloody Sunday

A world famous example of a Civil Rights march, which turned out to be a massacre is the Bloody Sunday, which was the 30th of January 1972, where NICRA hosted a march in Bogside. The march was arranged, because two Catholics rioters were shot by the police in Bogside in 1971. The peace march turned out to be a terrible massacre, because the police thought that the march was an excuse for making trouble. The police thought that the Catholics had weapons so suddenly they started to shoot at the Catholics during the march. But in fact – the Catholics were unarmed... 26 civil Catholics got shot, and 13 of them died immediately, while another person died 4½ month later of his wounds.

After Bloody Sunday the Irish Rock Band U2 made a protest song against the conflict in Northern Ireland. In the song “Sunday, Bloody Sunday” Bono sings about all the terrible things in the conflict, and for example he sings “There’s many lost, but tell me who has won”. I think U2 wanted to say, that there’s no winner in such a conflict like this. There are only losers.
During The Troubles

During The Troubles there were many violence campaigns from both the real IRA and the loyalists. The first bombing campaign came from the loyalists in 1969, where they bombed the Catholic infrastructure and power plants. The purpose of the bombing was to implicate the real IRA into The Troubles. Unfortunately, in a civilian perspective, it succeeded. The real IRA stroke back on Bloody Friday, which was the 21st of July 1972. The real IRA planted 22 bombs in the centre of Belfast, and they killed 9 people and injured more than 130.

In addition to the bombing campaigns, there were lots of guerrilla warfare between the real IRA and the Ulster Defence Regiment, which was a part of the British army. In the movie “Devils Own” there’s an excellent example of guerrilla warfare in the start, were Frank McGuire and his fellow soldiers fight against the Ulster Defence Regiment.

During The Troubles, The IRA had a high need for weapons, explosives, missiles etc. so they could fight the Protestants. In the start of The Troubles, The IRA was very poorly armed, they had only access to weapons reaming from a failed IRA campaign between 1956 and 1962, but these weapons were outdated and not suitable for a new campaign. Instead The IRA imported modern weapons, from the USA, and the Middle East. The Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi sympathised with the IRA, and he sent so many weapons to Northern Ireland, that there were enough weapons to supply two infantry battalions. After the shipments of weapons had arrived, the IRA became more and more powerful, but there was one group to counter the IRA, The Ulster Defence Regiment.

The Ulster Defence Regiment was a part of the British Army, and their goal was to eliminate the IRA threat, but when they tried to do so, they also killed many innocent civilians, so that was a big problem.

Good Friday Agreement
But then, finally, the two sides came to an agreement, which was signed Friday the 10th of April 1998 in Belfast, by the British and Irish governments. The protestant Ian Paisley became the first Prime minister of Northern Ireland. There was finally peace in Northern Ireland.
